It is located 30 km (18.6 mi) southeast of downtown Houston at Interstate 45 South and Bay Area Blvd. It has five major anchors and more than 170 stores and restaurants. It has 1,240,000 square feet (115,200 m²) of retail space.
The mall was conceived in 1973 with construction completed in 1978. The first anchor tenants were Montgomery Ward, Sears and Joskes. Law/Kingdon was the original architect.
In 1985 an expansion section opened with Macy's and Mervyn's as the two new anchors. Macy's remained there until it was sold to Dillard's in 1997. Foley's built its store in 2005 and the mall had a Macy's store again after the Federated-May merger in 2006.
The mall's anchor stores are Dillard's, JCPenney, Macy's, Sears, and a large-scale Forever 21 (in the former Mervyn's space).
In February 1989 Baybrook Mall was 96% occupied, making it the mall with the second highest percentage of occupied space in the Houston area.〔Bivins, Ralph. "(Sales at Houston malls rise/Local retailers cite improving economy, shuttle flights )." ''Houston Chronicle''. Friday February 17, 1989. Business 1. Retrieved on August 3, 1989.〕
==Expansion==
